ASF now in India

African swine fever has entered India, according to officials quoted by the Telegraph India newspaper. The disease was detected on several farms in the state of Assam, including the ones located in Majuli, a river island in the Brahmaputra River. Over 2,500 pigs have been recorded dead in six districts so far but the authorities are hesitating to cull the animals in the infected areas. Local officials decided to constitute a state-level expert committee and hold a meeting with stakeholders to discuss an action plan to contain the virus. The committee will be headed by the secretary of animal husbandry and veterinary department. The decision on the massive culling of the pigs in the affected areas is to be taken inside the committee.
India is the last Asian country to be impacted by the disease, which has spread in China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, North Korea and Timor-Leste. The disease is also present in Africa, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and several EU member states threatening to spread in some important producing countries such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
