ASF virus hits another large pig herd in Poland

Poland gets its 31st ASF outbreak reported this year in a large herd located in W?gorzewo district, informs Farmer magazine. The herd where the outbreak has been reported accounted for 2482 pigs, according to the report issued by the Chief Veterinary Officer.
This year, almost 30,000 pigs were culled due to outbreaks reported in the country, a number that surpasses the figure recorded last year when 25,395 pigs were culled in 109 outbreaks confirmed. The farm where the last case of African Swine Fever (ASF) was confirmed is located in the "red zone", a part of the country where the disease keeps spreading to the wild boars that carry the virus. On the farm where the outbreak of ASF was designated, procedures related to the elimination of the disease were implemented.
After 5 years of ASF presence in Poland, the disease is affecting Polish pork production, which fell by 1% in the first four months of 2019 to 702,400 tonnes. Last year, Poland has reported a 55 increase in production but that was due to producers exiting the industry, according to an AHDB analysis. 10 EU member states are affected by ASF, with Belgium and Hungary being the only ones that have managed to contain the disease in the wild boar population.
