ASF virus reaches Slovakia

Slovakia is confronted with its first outbreak of ASF, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The outbreak has been confirmed on a backyard farm with 4 susceptible pigs, out of which there was 1 case, located in Strazne, Trebisov, Kosice, near the border with Hungary.
The disease is also present in Hungary but only in the wild boar population. In June, Hungary Hungary had confirmed 681 cases in wild boars, some of them near the border with Slovakia. Ukraine, another neighboring country, is confronted for several years with the disease. The only country that managed to eradicate the disease was the Czech Republic. Outbreaks have been reported for almost 5 years in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and in the last couple of years has reached to Romania and Bulgaria. The disease is also present in Russia for a decade.
