Algeria enabled the export of meat with bone from Argentine

Algeria enabled its market to import bone-in meat from Argentina and accepted the proposal of the National Agrifood Health and Quality Service (Senasa) to update the certificate that accompanies shipments of vacuum-packed fresh chilled boneless bovine meat, extending the term of useful life of the meat to 120 days.

The Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, Juan José Bahillo, said that "the progress achieved is very auspicious for our country's international trade", when pondering the negotiations carried out by the portfolio under his charge, Senasa and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Nation that culminated with a technical videoconference between the two countries, in which professionals from Senasa, SAGPyA, the Argentine Embassy and representatives of the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DSV) of Algeria.

During this virtual meeting, the technical modifications required to update the export agreement for refrigerated beef with and without bone were identified. In addition, the recognition of the shelf life of the refrigerated product was extended to 120 days. In this way, new conditions were reached that allow promoting greater commercial opportunities between both countries.

In this way, the Algerian health service communicated to the president of Senasa, Diana Guillén, its agreement with the consensual health certificate that contains the requirements for the shipment of bovine meat with bone from Argentina to the African country.

It should be remembered that within the framework of the visit carried out in November 2022, officials from the Foreign Ministry held a meeting with the Algerian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Henni Abdelhafid, where they discussed the possibilities of acquiring beef from Argentina.

Argentina exported a total of 29,700 tons in 2004, and the last export of beef had been made in 2018.

Algeria is the 11th export destination for Argentine agro-industrial products, with a total value of USD 1,572 million in 2022, with a growth of 9.7% in relation to the previous year. In particular, Algeria stands out as the main export destination of powder milk, with a total value of USD 351 million in 2022. Argentina is Algeria's first supplier of corn, soybean and dairy products.
