All eyes on Germany as the ASF cases jump to 94

24 new cases of ASF have been added in just a few days to official data reported by Germany, raising the total number to 94. Most of the findings were reported in Brandenburg, in the core zone where the disease was found in other wild boars. Meanwhile, Mecklenburg's Minister of Agriculture Dr Till Backhaus called for unity with regard to the ASF control in Brandenburg. Such an animal epidemic can only be fought successfully if everyone cooperates and supports the necessary measures. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture again pointed out that the domestic pig population in Germany is still free of African swine fever. Nevertheless, in the areas where ASF has been confirmed, there are 300 pig farms and about 85,000 animals, according to officials from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
Minister Julia Klockner announced that has obtained financial support from the European Commission to build a solid fence at the border to Poland. According to local authorities, the main risk in spreading the disease in other areas is the human factor.
