Argentina wants to resolve its deficit in pork

Pork cuts imports of Argentine have increased to around $100 million a year said Rosario Stock Exchange in the most recent a study on the sector.
According to the analysis, "the swine trade balance was strongly deficit in 2017", imports reaching $118 million while the exports have peaked to $15 million, reports Agrositio magazine.
"The pig chain has experienced significant growth in recent years and has great potential to increase domestic consumption and replace imports", mentioned the RSE report.
In 2017, the number of pigs slaughtered in Argentina stood for the first time at 6,425,216 hogs offering a production of 566,276 tons of pork. Nevertheless, the demand was situated at 610,423 tons, a double volume compared to 2008 when it stood at 310,507 tons.
Until this year, Argentina has imported boneless pork cuts mainly from Chile and Brazil, ranging from 5 to 10% of local production. Starting April, U.S. pork was declared eligible for export to Argentina for the first time since 1992. Argentina is the third-largest pork-importing country in South America behind Chile and Colombia.
However, BCR analysts recommend that one of the objectives of the pig chain should be to replace this supply of imported meat, taking into account the growth of domestic consumption (last year exceeded 14 kilos per inhabitant for the first time) and placing balances in the export market.
