Argentine exported 3,454 million dollars of meat in 2022

Compared to the month of November 2022, the volumes shipped show a decline of -17.0%, while the value obtained shows a drop of -22.2%. In relation to the month of December 2021, the volumes exported are +2.5% higher, while the value obtained has been -27.8% lower.

The accumulated data for the year 2022 reveals that foreign sales of refrigerated and frozen beef were close to 632 thousand tons of product weight, for a value of approximately 3,454 million dollars. In relation to the year 2021, the volumes exported are +10.9% higher, while the value obtained has been +24.0% higher.

The average export price of refrigerated and frozen beef was US$3,926 per ton in December 2022. This value is -6.3% lower than that obtained in last November and -29.6% lower than the average price of December 2021, which had been US$5,579 per ton.

In the last eight months, there has been a persistent downward trend in prices in the main destinations from May onwards and the average US$3,926 per ton obtained in the month of December is US$2,375 per ton below the maximum registered in the month of April.

"The People's Republic of China is the main export destination, both for the month of December and for the accumulated year. In the last month, 7.91 thousand tons of bone-in meat and bovine bones were shipped to China, for a value of 9.4 million dollars and about 30.2 thousand tons of boneless bovine meat, for a value of 110.9 million dollars", said Mario Ravettino, President of the ABC Consortium.

In this way, China represented 80.3% of the volumes exported in December 2022 and 77.6% of the accumulated figure for the year. The average price of boneless meat sales to China in December 2022 was around US$3,676 per ton, marking a clear downward path from the maximum of US$5,900 obtained last May.

Sharp decline in boneless chilled meat shipments destined for the Netherlands: the 915 tons dispatched in December fell by -59.9% compared to November volumes, which amounted to 2,282 tons. The completion of the 481 quota shipment window to enter the destination from January 1, 2023 explains a large part of this drop.

Slight to moderate drop in shipments of refrigerated boneless meat destined for Germany: mainly the effect of lower activity within the Hilton tariff quota, whose average prices were at their lowest for the year during the last two months of 2022.

Shipments of certified Kosher meat, destined for Israel, recovered compared to the previous month: in December, just over 1,150 tons of chilled meat and 722 tons of frozen meat were dispatched. The average prices for this were about 1,400 dollars per ton in relation to the season that ended last September.

Reduction towards the axis of the 30 thousand tons of shipments of boneless frozen beef destined for China. In the month of November they were located at 37 thousand tons of product weight per month. The lower activity is due to adverse conditions in the destination market, particularly in relation to covid-19 cases, since these shipments will only arrive at their destination after the Lunar New Year festivities.

Stability in shipments of beef for the United States, which stood at around 1,350 tons in the last month of December, with an average price that is recovering compared to November, particularly in the case of the frozen product. These dispatches, for the most part, will use the tariff quota corresponding to the year 2023.

Since the beginning of September, a sharp drop in the prices offered by Chinese importers began to be noticed, and this was fully verified in the foreign trade data for bovine meat for the last month. December prices in China were -33.5% lower than last August.
