Australia remains the largest goat meat exporter in the world
The latest figures make Australia the world's largest goat meat exporter, although the country is ranked as a small goatmeat producer. MLA analysts say Australia produced 31,000 tons carcase weight in 2017, with an annual increase of 4%.
From total production, the country exported more than 90% of its goatmeat last year, shipments to other countries totaling 28,000 tons, according to Food and Agriculture Organisation data.
Australian goatmeat exports increased in volume by 6% last year, but reported an increase in value of 28% to $257 million, meaning the export prices have increased.
"Domestic over-the-hook indicators peaked in July but have since fallen by 30%, due in part to a modest strengthening of the Australian dollar, increasing supplies of other small stock and plant closures," MLA's analysis stated.
The US received two thirds of Australian exports in 2017, with Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, South Korea and Canada also representing important markets. In a positive sign for future growth prospects, MLA’s Global Consumer Tracker 2017 suggests there are a number of other markets with latent demand for goat meat.
