Australian are eating more eggs
Australia's egg production, in the fiscal year 2017-2018, reached 6.2 billion eggs, approximately 16.9 million eggs/day. That represents a 54% increase in production from 10 years ago and also signals an increase in consumption per capita to 245 eggs per year.
Companies have expanded their operations in order to cover the local demand who is now focused on free-range eggs, according to Weekly Time magazine.
The proportion of free-range supermarket volume increased to 45% of the category, which for the first time was just above cage at 44%. "The greater emphasis to move to free-range has led to an increase in production. We try to keep in line with the consumption trends", explains John O'Hara, Sunny Queen Farms managing director.
Eggs are now covering a large spectrum of the market due to their versatility and economical reasons.
"Eggs have always been known as the affordable protein but it is the broadening from breakfast fare to anytime meal that is driving the popularity boom. We are seeing new groups of consumers explore the versatility of eggs on the back of foodie and natural wholefood trends. Each Australian is eating an average of 4.7 eggs per week and they are now more likely to be eaten at lunch, dinner or as snacks", added Australian Eggs’ managing director Rowan McMonnies.
