Beef consumption in Argentina fell by 5 kg
While Argentinian beef exports have boomed in 2019, the situation in the domestic market is completely different. Last year, beef consumption in Argentina has dropped by almost 5 kg, sinking to the lowest level registered in the past 10 years, according to data presented by the Chamber of Meat Industry and Commerce of Argentina.
Pork, chicken and even roasted vegetables have replaced beef on the usual weekly grill celebrated by the Argentinians. Besides that, the loss of purchasing power due to the economy in recession has reduced demand for beef in the domestic market but has been a support for exports in the last two years, especially to China.
Between January-November 2019, Argentinian beef exports have reached 501,509 tonnes, increasing by 51% from 331,708 tonnes reported in 2018. More than 350,000 tonnes of beef were shipped to China, as the Asian country has increased its beef imports due to an animal protein shortage in the market.
