Big scandal on false labeling seafood in the US market
Casey Seafood Inc. Virginia and the owner of the company, James R. Casey, are making the subject of an investigation of federal authorities under the charges of selling foreign crab meat blended with Atlantic blue crab meat under the label “Product of USA”, reports WTVR.com.
The scheme took place for 3 years, from July 2012 until June 2015, according to the prosecutor’s office, charges against Jams Casey referring to conspiring to commit Lacey Act violations and conspiracy to defraud the United States.
The company imported crab meat from Indonesia, China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Central and South America. Casey and others co-conspirators removed the products from the packages and blended and combine it with Atlantic blue crab meat then package it in a container labeled “Product of USA.”
Some employees from Casey Seafood Inc. said they were told to cover the original labels with “Product of China”, “Product of Brazil” with new labels that said “Product of USA”.
If convicted, the company owner faces five years in prison for falsely labeled at least 180,000 kg of crab meat, with a retail value in the millions of dollars.
