COVID-19 crisis in Iran reduce red meat consumption by 60%

Red meat and poultry consumption are declining in Iran as the authorities decided to impose stricter lockdown measures amid coronavirus crisis. The consumption of red meat has seen a 60% decline following the outbreak of the new coronavirus and shutdown of restaurants and ceremony halls, reported the Financial Tribune newspaper quoting Mansour Pourian, the head of Iran’s Livestock Exporters National Assembly.
In the Middle East country, restaurants, hotels, ceremony halls have the highest share in red meat consumption, especially during the Iranian New Year holidays (March 20-April 3). Statistical data show that Iran had a total of 4.5 million head of heavy livestock in the cattle farms at the beginning of 2020. A total of 537,000 calves were born on these farms since then.
Other associations mentioned a drop of 50% in poultry consumption since the lockdown was adopted. At the end of 2019, Iran has reduced its red meat imports considering that the domestic supply is sufficient to cover the demand in the market.
