Commissioner Hogan presents the solution for ASF crisis in Romania
The European Commissioner for Agriculture, Phil Hogan, was present in Bucharest to discuss with the Romanian authorities the situation of African swine fever outbreaks in the country.
Romania has reported almost 900 outbreaks only this summer and, as a result, 232,722 pigs were culled, reports Agerpres agency.
"We work closely with the Romanian government on the matter of ASF outbreaks due to the fact that 75% of the pigs raised in households in EU are in Romania. We intensify the efforts focusing on monitoring and control.
The minister informed me about his intention to get financial support from the EC for the farmers affected by the spreading of the disease. There will be funds directed for this, but the most important thing is to focus on how to stop the spreading of the disease", said the European official.
Hogan also announced that EC has already directed some money to research in order to find a cure for the disease that proves to be lethal for the swine effective. "We have €10 million in the next year's budget for research. In the future we will try to offer a cure for this disease but, in short-term, we have to stop the spreading of ASF in Romania because it has an impact on the neighbouring countries and can affect the pork trade inside the EU", added Hogan.
Romanian authorities want to set higher standards on biosecurity measures in order to control the spreading of the disease and that includes even the small and individual farms. By now, Romania has confirmed 898 cases of ASF in 207 small towns in the country. From those cases, 57 were registered in the wild boar population.
