The European Commission has approved the application for registration of Slavonski Kulen, a dry pork sausage made in Croatia, in the register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

Croatian dry sausage receives PGI status

 

Slavonski Kulen, also known as Slavonskikulin, is a dry sausage produced annually from 1 November to 31 March in the Croatian region of Slavonia in the north-east of the country. The production of this sausage in the region is based on a tradition of more than 200 years.

This product is an important source of income for several farms in the region. Slavonski Kulen/Kulin is traditionally tasted at religious festivals, holidays or family celebrations.

The new denomination will be added to the list of over 1,410 PGI products. Among them, there are a total of 16 Croatian products.

In September 2013, Croatia's Ministry of Agriculture protected the Slavonski Kulen brand with a label of geographical origin at the national level and the next step was receiving protection throughout the European Union, which it has finally obtained.
