Danes are asked to check the animal welfare label

Danes are asked to follow official brands such as the state Animal Welfare Mark or the state-controlled Ecology label if they want to do something about the animal welfare. Food Minister Mogens Jensen is also confident that private initiatives are also a good example to follow. "Consumer confidence in official brands such as the state Animal Welfare Mark and the state-controlled Ecology label is well deserved. Now we have figures that show that consumers can also have good confidence in Danish companies' voluntary labelling schemes. It is my hope that it will benefit demand and thus also animal welfare", he said.
By now, Danish slaughterhouses have good control over the voluntary brands, which, for example, advertise that the farmer has had his animals out in the open. Only twice on more than 150 inspection visits did the National Board of Health emphasize to a slaughterhouse that they should always be able to document whether they are producing packages of welfare chickens or whether they are handling a conventional chicken for consumers.
Denmark has several state-controlled food labels. Among other things, the state-controlled Red Ecology Label, the state Animal Welfare Mark and the Keyhole make it easier for Danes to choose healthier and live according to the official dietary advice. Studies show that a majority of consumers know the brands and largely know what they stand for.

"It is a good idea to look for the state Animal Welfare Mark and other brands if you want to do something good for animal welfare", says Mogens Jensen.

In addition to the state labels, Danish agriculture has a number of voluntary labelling schemes, where the industry itself sets the criteria for using them. Legislation requires that voluntary labelling be accurate and clear to the consumer and must be documentable.
