Demand for a ban on imports from ASF countries
In the United Kingdom, the fear of introduction of African Swine Fever (ASF) appears to be very high in the agricultural sector. So now the Scottish Farmers' Union (NFU) called on the government in London strongly
Council to impose an immediate ban on imports of pork from EU countries where ASP cases were registered. In addition to Germany, Belgium is also explicitly mentioned, although the kingdom has long been officially ASF-free again, as well as Romania and Poland. In a letter to Agriculture Minister George Eustice, the NFU Scotland urged immediate action
. Otherwise there is a high risk
of introduction.
NFU Scotland President Martin Kennedy pointed out that there are no controls on EU pork imports into the UK. At a time when there is a serious biosecurity risk for our country, this cannot go on
, stressed Kennedy. According to him, the ASP is spreading rapidly across Europe. The association president criticized that the government had not taken any protective measures so far, fearing that it would violate trade and cooperation agreements.
Kennedy said that around 40% of the meat consumed in the UK is pork. According to preliminary data from the EU Commission, between January and August 2021, around 113,000 t of pork and abattoir by-products were delivered to the kingdom from Germany, and 64,210 t from Poland. Total imports from the Community, including live animals, amounted to 569,650 tonnes during the reporting period, of which pork and meat by-products amounted to 566,380 tonnes.
