Denmark plans to cut 8% in antibiotics used in pig farming

For the next four years, Danish pig producers must reduce their antibiotic consumption by two percent every year and completely abolish the use of medical zinc in the stables. The measure was supported by a large majority of law-makers and is was set after a recommendation from the Veterinary Medical Council.
The Conciliation Circuit has just decided that by the end of 2022, antibiotic consumption should be eight percent lower than it did at the beginning of 2019. At the same time, by 2022, medical zinc must be completely out of the pig stables. "Danish pig producers have, year after year, managed to cut significantly in their consumption of antibiotics, so today it is as much as 28 percent lower than it did back in 2009. This has been done thanks to good farming and the Food Agency's 'Yellow card scheme', which gives the farmer an incentive to reduce drug consumption," stated Food Minister Mogens Jensen.
At the same time, it was decided that the reduction target will continue to be calculated in kilograms of active substance as before, but that in parallel going forward a calculation will be made per dose.
