Egypt plans to invest in a processing facility in Kano, Nigeria

The local government of state Kano in Northern Nigeria announced a partnership with a group of Egyptian investors interested in establishing a meat processing firm in the area.
The news came out during the visit at the Government House in Kano. "Your coming at this hour is very significant and fruitful. Meat processing is one of the greatest investments which has the capability to create more jobs for the teeming youths", declared the Acting Governor, Hafiz Abubakar, quoted by Daily Trust newspaper.
The local authorities are pleased with the initiative and they offered full support to the investors to maximise the gains in livestock value chain.
Lately, Egypt has developed a strategy to achieve a higher rate of self-sufficiency but the land resources in the country may not be enough to expand the sector of animal farming. According to a US Department of Agriculture forecast, this year, beef consumption in Egypt is expected to reach 645,000 MT, up by 35,000 MT or 6 percent compared to 2017 and the calf crop production in 2018 to increase to 1.93 million head, up 4 percent from 1.85 million head in 2017. Nevertheless, Egypt remains a cattle importer with a number of 250.000 head per year and an investment in a processing plant in Nigeria could bring some benefits for the domestic market.
