Exports of live pigs accounted for only 1.7% of Romania's pork exports before the ASF outbreaks
"Exports of live pigs from Romania before the outbreak of African swine fever was only 1.7% out of the total. When referring to the small and large animal exports there is a different situation in the case of pigs. Romania exports live animals predominantly to the Middle East as well as to Turkey and recently again to Israel. Since last year our association has a collaboration project with Animals International in Australia and Angels Animals in Germany to easily change our export destinations for livestock in value-added commerce," she said.
The ACEBOP representative added that Romania has a slaughterhouse problem when it comes to sheep and cattle.
"Our main problem is in slaughterhouses. We have very few abattoirs capable of slaughtering sheep and cattle and a very large number of animals At the same time there is a cultural demand. I take Israel as a model and tell you that I pay very well for a beef steak provided that the animal is castrated in a certain way and has all the internal organs intact because they are large consumers of animal organs. And therefore they offer a superior price compared to other buyers, "Mary-Eugenia Pan? explained.
