France allocates 2 million euros for 3,000 audits for ASF prevention
The Ministry will finance this operation to the tune of two million euros over one year. The objective is to strengthen the application of biosecurity measures in livestock farming, aimed at preventing the introduction of African swine fever (ASF).
The first audits will be organized from January 2025. The ANSP will rely on the Institut du porc for the training of auditors and on the National Society of Veterinary Technical Groups (SNGTV and its network) for the mobilization of veterinarians and the carrying out of biosecurity audits.
The objective is to prioritize farms that have not yet carried out this type of audit, mainly small farms. Any farm that sold fewer than a thousand pigs in 2023, as well as all wild boar farms, are eligible for government funding for this audit. An individual letter will be sent to them to inform them of this operation. Veterinarians, particularly those working on these eligible farms, will be informed of the procedures for setting up this operation and training in conducting these audits.
France is currently free of ASF, but is exposed to the introduction of the virus into its territory from many countries where the disease is prevalent in pigs or wild boars. The rigorous application of biosecurity measures in livestock farming is an essential means of effectively protecting French livestock, by reducing the risks of introduction and spread of the virus in livestock farms.
Biosecurity includes all measures aimed at preventing the introduction of pathogenic agents in livestock farming as well as their spread in and outside the farm (cleaning-disinfection measures, limiting access to external workers, setting up sanitary airlocks, measures to avoid any contact between pigs and wild boars, etc.). Biosecurity in livestock farming remains the best way to limit the risks of introduction and spread of ASF in livestock farming, and therefore the best way to protect the livestock.
