Germany: 105,800 fattening pigs slaughtered in 2022 were unfit for consumption
The proportion of animals unfit for consumption thus remained unchanged compared to the previous year (2021: 114,500 of 50.4 million fattening pigs slaughtered). In the case of broilers, the proportion of animals not suitable for consumption fell slightly from 2.1 to 2.0%.
The main reason for the disqualification in fattening pigs was for multiple abscesses (collections of pus in the tissue). For 32.6% (34 300 animals) of the animals found unfit for consumption, the official staff gave this reason, followed by organoleptic deviations (variances in smell, consistency or colour) with 14.2% (14 900 animals).
An examination of the organs in 2022 showed that around 5.4% (2.3 million cases) of all slaughtered fattening pigs had pneumonia (changed proportion of the lungs was greater than 10%). This corresponds to the value for 2021. In 2020 and 2019, the proportion was 5.7 and 6.6%, respectively. When the livers of the fattening pigs slaughtered in 2022 were examined, the proportion fell only slightly: in 10.2% (4.3 million cases) of the fattening pigs examined, the liver showed a previous parasite infestation, while the animals with a so-called parasite liver in previous years proportions of 10.4% (2021) and 9.8% (2020).
The percentage of broilers not suitable for consumption fell slightly from 2.1 to 2.0%.
Veterinary authorities declared 12.1 million broilers unfit for human consumption last year, 2.0% of the 612.2 million animals slaughtered. In the previous year, the value was 2.1%, at that time 13.5 million of 634.4 million slaughtered broilers were unfit for consumption.
In the case of fattening chickens, deep dermatitis continued to be the main reason for unfitness with a proportion of 34.1%. The investigating staff gave ascites as the second most common reason (16.8%).
In addition to the animal-related reasons for unfitness, the official staff also documents the so-called slaughter damage, which can occur, for example, as a result of the slaughtering process or insufficient bleeding of the slaughtered animals.
In 2022, the bodies of 14,400 animals were declared unfit for consumption when fattening pigs were slaughtered. That was 0.03% of all fattening pigs slaughtered, as in 2021 (0.03% or 14,700 animals). In the case of broilers, 1.6 million animals were declared unfit for slaughter damage, representing 0.3% of broilers slaughtered. In the previous year, the proportion was still 0.4% (2.3 million animals).
