Germany: turnover in meat industry decreased by 11.2% compared with 2019

Slaughtering and meat processing industries generated almost 9% less turnover in 2021 than in 2020. In May 2022, meat was by just under 17% more expensive, and poultry meat cost even 24% more than in May 2021. Turnover in retail trade with meat and meat products down 67% in the last 25 years.

Germany: turnover in meat industry decreased by 11.2% compared with 2019

The 19 largest establishments with 1,000 or more persons employed in the meat industry accounted for one quarter (24.5%) of the branch’s turnover in 2021. 1,445 establishments with 20 or more persons employed were covered; they generated a total turnover of 40.6 billion euros in 2021. That was 8.8% less turnover than in 2020, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Turnover decreased by 11.2% compared with 2019, the year before the Covid-19 crisis. In 2019, turnover had reached a ten-year peak (45.7 billion euros).
