Germany: upward trend for meat substitutes

In 2021, businesses in Germany produced nearly 17.0% more meat substitute products than a year earlier and the production increased by even 62.2% compared with 2019, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Meat production decreased by 8%, in terms of value, over the same period. 97,900 tonnes of meat substitute products were produced in 2021, roughly 83,700 tonnes a year earlier and 60,400 tonnes in 2019. The value of these products rose by 22.2% to 458.2 million euros in 2021 from the previous year (2020: 374.9 million euros). Their value increased by 68.0% compared with 2019, when they had been worth 272.8 million euros. The number of businesses producing meat substitutes in Germany increased from 34 in 2019 and 2020 to 44 in 2021.
