Germany increases its pork exports in first quarter of 2025
German pork exports increased slightly between January and March 2025 compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter of the current year, 548,000 tonnes of pork were exported, an increase of 2 percent, according to the Agricultural Market Information Company (AMI) based on Destatis data.
EU exports record significant increase
A look at the destination countries reveals very different developments. While exports to third countries fell significantly by 30 percent, exports to countries within the EU increased by almost 9 percent. The largest share of the traded pork volumes, namely 482,000 tonnes, remained within the EU.
FMD outbreak paralyzed deliveries to third countries
A significantly smaller share, namely 66,000 tonnes, was sold outside the EU. In the same period last year, 93,000 tonnes of pork were exported from Germany to third countries. Due to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among water buffalo in Brandenburg in January, deliveries outside the EU were virtually impossible. Germany regained FMD-free status in April, and exports to various third countries have since resumed.
Main customers Italy and the Netherlands
Within the EU, pork exports to the main buyers, Italy and the Netherlands, increased by 14 and 9 percent, respectively. Other countries also significantly increased their imports from Germany, including Eastern European countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania.
Market experts expect the trend of rising pork exports to continue in the coming months. On the one hand, the volume of pork produced in Germany is expected to increase slightly. On the other hand, trade with third countries is possible again.
