Hong Kong bans poultry imports from Italian province
The decision was taken as a precautionary measure after the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) gave a notification about an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in the Province of Padua in Italy.
The CFS has thus banned the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from the province with immediate effect to protect public health in Hong Kong.
In the first semester of 2017, Hong Kong imported nearly 1,000 tons of frozen poultry meat and about 10,000 poultry eggs from Italy, according to CFS.
"The CFS has contacted the Italian authorities over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation," a spokesman from CFS said.
