Indonesia improves quality standards on poultry products to boost exports

Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture is asking the companies in the poultry sector to raise the quality standards of their products to be competitive on the foreign markets, reports Asian-Agribiz magazine.
Good breeding practices, animal welfare standards and veterinary certification are necessary to respond to the requirements met abroad and, since last month, 5 big companies in the country- Japfa Comfeed Indonesia, Sierad Produce, Charoen Pokphand Indonesia and Unggas Lestari Unggul- have already accessed some external markets with products such as processed food, feed and hatching eggs. "The practices and standards implemented are key to exploring export markets", explained I Ketut Diarmita, Director General of Livestock and Animal Health.
One of the important issues for Indonesian poultry industry is the avian influenza free certification that can be obtained from a special department created to secure the access to the export markets for local products within this sector. 77 farms have already get their certification, according to the Ministry of Agriculture from the Asian country.
