Insect protein for poultry could become reality in EU in one year

EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis have given new hopes for allowing insect protein in feed for poultry starting from 2019.

Present at a conference organised by IPIFF, Andriukaitis recognized the need for a new resource in feed for poultry but regulation and technical matters had to be sorted first before this resource could be tapped, informs All About Feed portal.

"You are part of this solution – I count on you", declared EU official at the conference. Since July 2017, insect proteins are used in aquafeed in the EU but they are limited to only 7 insect species: 3 types of cricket, 2 types of mealworm, and 2 fly species.

For now, insect protein producer Protix has announced its intention to develop a common program on insect breeding with poultry genetics company Hendrix Genetics in order to access the EU and other markets as soon as they get clearance on this new type of feed.
