KHV virus found in an aquaculture facility in Romania

Koi Herpes Virus was detected and confirmed in an aquaculture farm in Giurgiu, Romania, by the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Agency (ANSVSA), informs local magazine Industria Carnii.
The disclosure was made public at the request of National Fishery Producers Asociation (ROMFISH) who wanted to respond to several rumours regarding multiple cases of KHV underreported by the authorities and representatives of the sector.
According to ANVSA's information, the KHV disease is confirmed in only one aquaculture exploitation in Giurgiu but two years ago the virus has also been reported in an aquaculture farm in Timis county, close to the Hungarian border.
"Some information launched in media by people without special knowledge of the phenomenon can induce modifications in the consumer's habits and that can have an effect on the whole fishery sector in Romania", said a statement from ROMFISH.
KHV affects only species like Koi carp (Cyprinus carpio Koi) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio) while other fish included in the Cyprinidae family may carry it without being sick. The virus does not affect humans but the fish is usually dead in a few hours after the first signs of clinical signs of the disease. Quarantine for the fish is the only measure recommended in such cases.
The virus has been very active during 2015-2016 in countries such as Poland, Czech Republic and Germany leading to losses to effective in the farms affected and also financial losses for investors.
