Meat production in Georgia grew by 9.5% in Q1 of 2018

Meat prices on the Georgian market, except for pork, have registered the second month of growth in April reaching the highest level in the last 12 month. Nevertheless, the speed and direction of changes in prices were not uniform in the last year.
Fresh beef has gained 5.6% in the last 12 month while chicken meat marked only a difference of 1% compared to April 2017. Mutton prices have evolved better gaining 6.8%.
The supply is still pressuring the prices as GeoStat's data shows that meat production in the ex-Soviet republic is up by 9.5% in the first quarter of this year, compared to Q1 2017. The number of bovine animals went down by 51,600 head in the same period of time, while the trade balance decreased by only 18,700 head. In case of pigs, the total number increased by 16,400 head (+10.2%) during the last four quarters, and the trade balance decreased by 1,600 head, leading to a marginal but logical decline in pork prices. The 2.4% increase in the number of poultry started to affect the chicken meat market only recently, reports local newspaper The Financial, citing official statistics.
In the last two month prices have registered a small recovery but only because of the Easter season and an increase in tourist flow.
