North Rhine-Westphalian meat production increased by 10.6%

The total meat and meat products produced in 235 North Rhine-Westphalian slaughterhouses reached a value of 11.4 billion euros in 2016.

Furthermore, last year, North Rhine-Westphalia had a production of pork worth 3.5 billion euros (+1.2%). The beef production reached a sales value of 1.1 billion euros (-4.2%), while the poultry meat production reached 345 million euros (+7.9%) in value. As a result of further processing, last year 429,000 tonnes of pork with a sales value of 1.14 billion euros (+ 7.0%) were salted, dried or smoked. In addition, 325,000 tonnes (-0.2%) of sausages worth 1.48 billion euros (-1.9%) were produced.

Germany reached a total meat production worth 36.4 billion euros (+ 3.2%) in 2016. According to the ISN data, North Rhine-Westphalia produced 32.1% of the country's total meat production.

The ISN says that the latest statistics don't show the ongoing pressure on the meat industry, with various insolvencies that took place in the recent past. "This is due to the noticeable increase in pig slaughter prices in the first half of the year, which significantly increased the raw material prices and brought several companies into bankruptcy. In the sausage sector, they account for about 70% of the total raw material costs."
