Norway reports another record year on whitefish exports

Exports of cod, saithe, haddock and other whitefish reached a value of 15 billion NOK in 2017

Last year it was a good one for the whitefish industry of Norway exports heading up to 8% compared to the previous year, to an amount of 15 billion NOK.

An increased volume of saithe led to lower export prices, but there was a positive trend in cod and haddock prices, noted the experts Norwegian Seafood Council, according to the Seafood.no.

For this year prices for cod and haddock could rise again as the quotas have been reduced, mentioned one analyst with the Norwegian Seafood Council.

“The quotas on cod and haddock have been reduced in 2018, and there will be major competition for the raw material, which probably will lead to a price increase this year”, said Ingrid Kristine Pettersen.

Norway exported 89,158 tonnes of clipfish valued at NOK 4.1 billion in 2017. Measured in volume, this is an increase of 10%, or 8,428 tonnes, and measured in value this is an increase of NOK 344 million, or 9%, from 2016.

The biggest market for this product, Portugal, received 22,363 tonnes of clipfish at a value of NOK 1.4 billion. This is a reduction in value of NOK 65 million, or 4% , from 2016.

At the same time, exports of salted fish increased by NOK 67 million from 2016 to nearly NOK 1.3 billion in 2017. The volume has been reduced by 1,093 tonnes, or 4%, to 28,198 tonnes.

China was the largest market for Norwegian frozen whitefish with a volume of 87,763 tonnes worth NOK 2 billion. This is an increase of 20% in volume and 27% in value from 2016.

The full volume of frozen whitefish exported by Norway has reached 199,731 tonnes, valued at NOK 5.3 billion (up to 9% from 2016).

Fresh whitefish products exported were at 114,283 tonnes worth NOK 3.4 billion (up to 7%).
