One more year extension for the European deforestation law: it would apply in 2027

One more year extension for the European deforestation law: it would apply in 2027

This is the second one-year extension decided by the EU.

According to the approved text, companies will have an additional year to comply with the new European rules against deforestation.

Large operators and retailers will have to comply with the legislation's obligations from December 30, 2026, while smaller companies (with fewer than fifty employees and an annual turnover of less than ten million euros) will have to do so from June 30, 2027.

“The new deadlines aim to ensure a smooth adaptation and the strengthening of the IT system that operators, traders and their representatives use to make electronic due diligence declarations,” the European Parliament said in a statement.

Parliament approved the simplification of the Law passed in 2023, which will be reviewed by April 30, 2026, in order to assess the impact of the law and the administrative burden it generates, the legislative body indicated.

“MEPs believe that the obligation to submit a due diligence declaration should fall on companies that introduce a product to the EU market for the first time, and not on operators and traders who subsequently market it; the changes to the regulation will also reduce the obligations for smaller companies, which will only have to submit a single simplified declaration”.

The text was approved by 402 votes in favor, 250 against, and eight abstentions.

The EFE news agency reported that the votes of the European People's Party (EPP) and far-right groups in the European Parliament "joined forces for the second time this month in a vote on environmental regulations, after having also lowered the requirements for companies regarding due diligence, sustainability and corporate responsibility".

“The EPP is demonstrating that its objective is indeed to dismantle the text on deforestation by once again allying itself with the far right on certain amendments and refusing to defend the Commission’s proposal,” declared Green MEP Marie Toussaint.
