Pork production will increase more than 1.4 million tons this year

The national production of pork will increase 4.2 percent in 2017 compared to 2016, which is expected to generate 1.4 million tons this year, thanks to the efforts of producers and the support of the Government of the Republic, said the General Livestock Coordinator of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), Francisco Gurría Treviño.

The above when attending, with the representation of the holder of the SAGARPA, José Calzada Rovirosa, at the closing of the VI National Congress of Swine Producers, "OPORPA 2017", where he stressed that the progress was made thanks to the expectations of an increase in the national demand, better sanitary control, higher expected yield and optimal prices in the market.

He assured that this sector has a promising future as a result of the support provided by SAGARPA to small and medium producers in the country, in addition to exports of Mexican pork increased 9.5 percent in 2016, compared to the previous year.

In addition, he announced that up to 20 million pesos will be reinforced the promotional schemes for market diversification and recalled that last year pork sales were made abroad for more than 432 thousand tons, compared to 395 thousand that were exported in 2015, mainly to Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea and China.

Also, internally, will promote the generation of better information and greater dissemination in the production, sale and consumption of certified pork, with quality and safety, as it is highly nutritious and is an animal protein of high demand within reach of all.

Currently the annual per capita consumption is 16.3 kilograms and it is expected that Mexican families can increase their intake of animal protein through the consumption of this safe food, with high standards of health and produced by Mexicans.

For his part, Heriberto Hernández, president of the pig producers' body, thanked Secretary José Calzada Rovirosa for the support of the Government of the Republic, through SAGARPA, to this sector that is constantly growing, applying better practices every day in the pig management, to offer national and international consumers, products with great quality and hygiene.
