Positive projections for poultry and pig farming in Brazil

The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) presented its projections for the production, consumption and exports of chicken, pork and eggs in Brazil.

According to the entity's projections, the Brazilian production of chicken meat should end the year 2022 with a total of up to 14.500 million tons, a number that should exceed by up to 1.5% the total produced in 2021, with 14.329 million tons. With this number, Brazil surpasses China and takes second place among the world's largest producers of chicken meat, behind the USA.

Of the total produced this year, about 9.7 million tons should be destined for the Brazilian market (0.2% less compared to 2021, with 9.719), generating a per capita consumption of up to 45.1 kilos (0. 8% less compared to 2021, with 45.5 kilos). Exports, on the other hand, could reach up to 4.850 million tons, a volume up to 5% higher than that recorded in 2021, with 4.610 million tons.

For next year, a production of up to 14.750 million tons of chicken meat (+2% compared to 2022) is expected, with internal availability of 9.750 (+0.5%) and per capita consumption of 45.5 kilos (+0.8%), in addition to total exports of up to 5.2 million tons (+8.5%).

With regard to pork, Brazilian production is expected to end 2022 with up to 5 million tons produced, surpassing the total shipped in 2021 by 6.5%, with 4.701 million tons. The number is a historic record for the sector.

Of this total, 3.9 million tons should be destined for the domestic market, a volume 9.5% more than in 2021, with 3.564 million tons. With this, per capita consumption should reach 18 kilos, a number 8% higher than that recorded in 2021, with 16.7 kilos. For the international market, 1.120 million tons should be shipped, a volume 1.5% lower than the 1.137 million tons registered in 2021

For 2023, pork production in Brazil could reach up to 5.150 million tons (+4% compared to 2022), with 3.950 million tons destined for the domestic market (+3%) generating per capita consumption of up to 18.5 kilos (+3%), and total exports of up to 1.250 million tons (+12%).

Finally, Brazilian egg production should reach a total of 52.070 billion units in 2022 (-5% compared to 2021), generating per capita consumption of 241 units (-6%) and exports of up to 10 thousand tons (- 12%). In 2023, egg production in Brazil is expected to reach 51.025 billion units (-2% compared to 2022), with per capita consumption of 235 units (-2.5%) and exports of up to 11 thousand tons (+10 %).

According to the evaluation of the ABPA president, Ricardo Santin, in the case of chicken meat, Brazil continues to be the leader in poultry meat exports and should further increase sales next year.

"Global poultry farming has faced major challenges in recent years with regard to the high costs of food production and a complex picture of Avian Influenza in various regions of the planet. Brazil, which is free of the disease and has strengthened its biosecurity protocols to preserve its health status, should continue in its role of supporting the food security of the more than 150 importing nations, in addition to guaranteeing the internal supply of products", emphasizes Santin.

According to ABPA's director of markets, Luís Rua, the opening of markets in Mexico and Canada for Brazilian pork should generate new opportunities for Brazilian exporters.

"China, our main international client, will maintain strong demand for Brazilian protein, which will add to the demands of the new conquered markets, and the maintenance of the heating up of purchases from certain countries in Asia. On the other hand, the expansion of the range of pork products offered by companies should reinforce the presence of the protein among the most consumed in Brazil", highlights Rua.
