The UK reduces sheepmeat imports by 18%
At the beginning of the year, Britain's sheepmeat imports have declined by 18% (900 tonnes) totaling 4,400 tonnes. The biggest drop reported for a supplier was seen in New Zealand's sheepmeat (500 tonnes), with a total volume of 2,000 tonnes shipped in the British market. Also, Ireland has reduced its shipments in the UK by more than 200 tonnes in January 2020.
At the same time, British sheepmeat exports have increased 7% y-o-y mainly on large volumes shipped to Ireland, the Netherlands and Italy. Shipments to France and Germany have dropped in volume, while exports to Belgium were steady, according to AHDB. The total volume of sheepmeat exports reached 6,900 tonnes (+500 tonnes). "There was also many small rises to smaller destinations, which once combined have a larger impact on overall volumes. As to be expected, over two-thirds of exports were as carcases," explained Rebecca Wright, Red meat Analyst, AHDB.
