Tonnies sets restructuring plan

Tonnies, the largest meat processor in Germany announced that its Rheda plant is to reopen gradually with new hygiene measures put in place. Around 48,000 pigs will be slaughtered weekly, which represent almost half of the capacity of the processing plant. The new start was made possible by new ventilation systems with decentralised HEPA filtration units, which have been installed in the cutting areas. They exchange air 2.5 times per hour and reduce the air circulating in the room from potentially introduced viruses. The expanded hygiene concept also includes weekly row tests for all production employees in mobile tents at the factory entrance.
Also, the meat producer intends to have almost 1,000 workers under direct contract by 1st of September. Housing areas for these foreign workers will be contracted by the company, which has already created two housing companies founded for this purpose. Similar measures are to be adopted in other plants owned by the German meat producer. More than 1,000 workers in Rheda plant have been tested positive for COVID-19 in June. Operations in the slaughterhouse have been suspended and an investigation directed by the authorities is underway.
