Turkey's red meat production drops further
211,435 tonnes of red meat were produced in Turkey in the first three months of the year, representing a drop of 16.5% year-on-year and one of 18.6% on a quarterly basis, according to official data released by Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
Only 174,052 tonnes were produced in the slaughterhouses, mentioned the report. From the total volume of 211,435 tonnes, cattle meat production was estimated to stand at 191,287 tonnes while sheep meat was around 17,932 tonnes.
In 2018, the country produced 1.12 million tonnes of red meat, a drop of 0.7% over the previous year.
Including cattle and buffalos, the number of bovine animals totaled 17.2 million heads in 2018, up 6.9 percent year-on-year.
Official data also said the number of ovine animals surged 4.1 percent to 46.1 million heads over the same period.
Turkey ranks second place in the global livestock market with 1.2 million head imported in 2018. The level of livestock imports recorded last year is 24 times over the figures reported in 2014 (50,000 cattle head).
