Spain: Navarra will vaccinate its entire cattle population against nodular dermatosis

The Government of Navarre will extend vaccination against nodular dermatosis to the entire bovine population of the Foral Community, following its approval this week by the committee of the Veterinary Health Alert Network.

The new campaign, which will run until May 1st, will allow for the immunization of 60,132 cattle on 277 farms located in the southern half of the country, thus completing coverage across the entire territory. Until now, 51% of the cattle population – located in the north – had already been vaccinated in a previous phase that concluded on February 28th, with approximately 61,500 animals protected on 1,113 farms.

Navarra requested full vaccination in December, although initially only the northern region was authorized. After a new outbreak was detected in Aragon, the request has finally been approved for the entire region .

Contagious nodular dermatosis (CND), considered a Category A disease, requires total culling in the event of an outbreak and can cause significant production losses. The cost of the campaign, which will affect approximately 121,000 head of cattle, is estimated at €323,000 and will begin in the coming days, following authorization from the European Union.
