Boehringer Ingelheim receives marketing authorization for bluetongue vaccine in Germany

The vaccine was developed in just seven months in collaboration with Bioveta and has been authorized for use since June 2024 under a vaccine authorization regulation to combat the current BTV-3 outbreak. BTV-3 causes severe clinical symptoms in sheep and cattle. In addition to the considerable animal suffering, outbreaks can lead to significant economic losses for farmers, disrupt international trade, and limit food supplies. To date, more than 13 million vaccine doses have been provided in Germany to contain the spread of BTV-3 and its devastating effects.

"Our vaccine protects the health of sheep and cattle, thus securing the livelihoods of those who care for them. This approval underscores our commitment to supporting farmers, veterinarians, and authorities in the fight against BTV-3", says Barbara Umbs, Head of Livestock at Boehringer Ingelheim. Notifiable animal diseases such as bluetongue continue to pose a significant threat, underscoring the need for long-term preventive solutions to protect livestock.

Bluetongue virus is transmitted by midges (Culicoides). The disease has a strong seasonal pattern, with increasing incidence as temperatures rise. There are 28 different serotypes of BTV that only infect ruminants such as cattle and sheep. Boehringer Ingelheim's vaccination against serotype 3 protects susceptible animals from the painful symptoms of the disease and from death. Experts recommend vaccinating animals well in advance of the midge flight season. This requires one injection for sheep and two injections for cattle, three weeks apart.
